All About Numbers

This is another farm themed number activity, which is really going to challenge you. It is a problem solving counting activity, all about more than. You will need:

Two farmer’s fields

Farm animals (toys, paper animals, or even pasta pieces, Lego or cotton wool balls)

Number cards.

This is what I used:

First make two fields to keep the animals in. I used the same cows as we had on Tuesday. Then choose a number card between 1 and 5 and put it underneath both of the fields.

The challenge is to put more cows into the fields than the number on the card. It can be any amount, but it has to be more than the number on the card. Like this:

So, the number on the card is 3 and the number of cows is more than 3 which is 5. It could have been 4, or 6, or 7 etc.

Change the number card and try again. Like this:

So, the number on the card is 4 and the number of cows is more than 4 which is 7. It could have been 5, or 6, or 8 etc.

Next, the challenge is even more difficult. This time the number of cows in each field has to be more than the number on the card and the number of cows in each field needs to be different.

Like this:

So, the number on the card is 1 and the number of cows is more than 1 and the amount is different in each field, 2 and 4.

Change the number card and try again. Like this:

Here the number on the card is 5 and the number of cows is more than 5 and the amount is different in each field, 6 and 9.

Have fun challenging yourselves and thinking of as many different ways as you can to put the cows into the fields. There will be lots of ways to do it.

Good luck!

One Man Went to Mow

Learning a new song and making playdough men to count afterwards. Not forgetting the very important dog!

Busy Bees

Lots of fun had with this rocket made in the holidays, zooming to the moon. What a great job completed on this model. Well done. Weighing objects and estimating which would be heavy or light. Great idea! Matching farm animals to their babies. Please keep challenging yourselves children, we love it!

Incredible Hulk of a Cake

Happy 4th Birthday to one of our lovely children who celebrated his special day last week with this amazing cake.

Thank you for sending us photos of all of your learning.

All About Numbers

Here is a counting number song for you to listen to and join in with. It is about cutting the grass in the farmer’s field, called a meadow.

Have you got any toys you can use as men to mow the meadow? Put them in a line, on the floor or on a table and count them, like in the song. You might even have a toy dog too!

How about making some playdough men and a dog to play and count with? Ask your family if there is enough of these ingredients to spare. You must check there is enough flour first.

Ingredients

  1. 1 small cup of plain flour.
  2. 1 small cup of water.
  3. 1 tablespoon cooking oil.
  4. 1 teaspoon cream of tartar. (helps the playdough stay fresh for longer)
  5. half a small cup of salt.
  6. food colouring (optional)

Method

Mix the water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food colouring in a saucepan and heat until warm. Remove from heat and add flour. Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last longer.

When you have finished playing with the playdough put it into a box with a sealed lid, or a sealed plastic bag, to keep it fresh.

Here is what I did:

Now you can make your men and the dog.

Can you make five men and a dog, to mow a meadow?

Count the men to check you have them all.

Now add one more. How many men are there now? Count them.

Can you make ten men and a dog, to mow a meadow?

Have fun making your ten playdough men and the dog and send us your photos to:

Ready to read

This week our book is all about farm animals. Would you like to live with a lot of far animals in your house? Find out what happens to the old lady in this story.

What did you like?

What didn’t you like?

Who would you like to be?

I liked it when the cow did a jig on the table. I didn’t like it when the chicken broke the jug. I would like to be the old man because he was very wise.

Terrific Tuesday

Welcome back children, we hope you all had a good holiday and we are so glad to see your smiley faces again.

Cute Cow Drawings

Today the children have been working on their drawings of a cow, their name writing and the sound c for cow. These pictures are all so impressive boys and girls well done!

Number Time

The children have been using their maths skills whilst being creative as they have made their own animal barns and put the correct amount of animals into the barn. This shows they are using the skill of matching the correct quantity to the numeral. Fantastic work Nursery!

Busy Bees having fun

Lovely to see smiley faces and some funky fingers work today!

It has been a nice first day of the term and a good start to our new topic (The Farm).

See you tomorrow Nursery!
